Foster

What Is Fostering?

Fostering is taking a rescued cat or dog into your home and providing temporary shelter and care until a permanent home can be found.

Become a Foster Parent

If you're not ready for the long-term commitment and responsibility of pet adoption, you can still be a part of Carolina P.A.W.S. and help us fulfill our mission of finding loving permanent homes for abandoned and abused animals. Every day the Carolina P.A.W.S. network is alerted to homeless pets in abusive situations, many in imminent danger. We're ready to spring into action and rescue them. But once they're safe, we need people like you to open their homes and hearts and care for them while they await adoption.

Since we do not have a facility, the more foster parents we have offering their homes increases the number of animals that we can rescue. Being a foster parent is a win-win situation that is not only essential for animals in need and Carolina P.A.W.S., but it is fulfilling for you, as well. It allows you to enjoy the companionship of a pet without the long-term commitment. It is perhaps the most meaningful way to help...and the most rewarding.

What are the foster parent's responsibilities?

  • Provide shelter and love to a rescued dog or cat.
  • Work on basic training and socialization to help increase your foster animal’s chances of being adopted.
  • Provide basic information and photos of your foster animal for their online profile.
  • Transportation to local vet appointments and events when needed.
  • Assist with home visits/meet and greets.

How do I find out about animals needing homes?

When an animal needs fostering and we think you'd be a good match, we will contact you. You are under no obligation.

Can I choose the type of animal I foster?

Absolutely! You can choose to foster dogs, cats, puppies, kittens or any combination. We have several foster parents who take only small dogs, and some who specialize in a certain breed. Some prefer male cats, and some female. We will do our best to match you up with the most appropriate pet.

Who covers the expenses?

Carolina P.A.W.S. covers all medical expenses as well as any supplies needed for a rescued cat/dog.

How long of a commitment is Fostering?

  • Anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months on average.
  • We cannot guarantee how long it will take for an animal to be adopted.
